Universal PDS to ensure food security?

Amartya Sen had suggested that the Government must revert to Universal Public Distribution System (PDS) to ensure effective food security rather than the targeted distribution proposed by the Government. A quick math on the expenses to be incurred, by the  Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA) reveals that Universal PDS would not deplete the budget as feared. The CBGA also favours the Universal PDS as an effective tool to ensure Food Security.

Capitation Fee Shhh..

After the States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra passed laws prohibiting capitation fees in colleges, the Centre has followed by passing a bill against Capitation Fee and giving misleading information about the faculty. The Supreme Court had prohibited educational institutions from taking capitation fee as early as in 1993. Well, the question is whether the decisions by the courts or the laws passed by the states put a stop to the practice?

Courts for delivery of justice within 30 days of hearing final arguments for matters with monetary value over 5 crores is one among the many proposals by the Law Ministry. The Ministry also made clear its intention to remove over 3 crores of pending cass by 2012. The initiatives by the Ministry deserve applause and support as the principle goes as justice delayed is justice denied.

Food Security – a hamper to Progress? or progress?

The reports by the World Food Programme and the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation highlighted the high level of Malnutrition and hunger in India. The lack of availability of food in various pockets of the country ranks India in the 94th position globally. Probably, the Government has set its sights on setting things right through a proposed  Food Security Act. This proposal has serious economic consequences as it is being enacted during times of global food price inflation and developed countries like the US and the UK are having a close look at their Food Security Programs. The proposed enactment will be a boon for the poor and the destitute in our country.
